| STUDENT PROJECT- BUTTERFLY DISCOVERY BOX |
| The above spreads belong
to a 40 page wire-bound identification guide that appeared as part of a
'Discovery Box', created in my advanced typography couse. The assignment
was to create a set that would be sold in the Discovery Channel Store,
we chose the theme, the name, and all of the items to be contained therein.
'Winged Whispers' uncovered the colorful world of Lepidoptera or
butterflies. The set included the fully-researched identification guide,
a booklet on observing and attracting butterflies, seed packets (bottom
image) to start your own butterfly garden, a butterfly loft and a magnifying
glass.
The main text in all the pieces is white on black with delicate blurred italicized colored type in the background. The colored type mimicking a colorful flutter of wings and connects genus names with species' pictures through a subtle colorcoding system. In the identification book, interleaved with the idenfication pages are abstractions of butterfly wings paired with excerpts from poetry on the topic of butterflies (second row, right side of spread). |
