maggie, my
magnificent cat
I took off for the none too distant
Kutztown University. I had intended to split myself
evenly between graphic design and
illustration studies. But after my first typography class,
I was hooked. It should be said that
it was difficult to tear me away from my art table
and my computer. At the beginning
of my junior year, I studied at a school just
outside of London. Although I had
my differences with the English approach to work
(when the students approached work
at all, they were more interested in creating an
amazing story about the deeper meaning
rather than showing much in the tangible
sense- a crafty device to avoid work....is
it tea time yet?), I soon watched my own work
take on another dimension. Maybe
it was all the Brittiness rubbing off on me,
but I was forced to think about my
conceptual approach.
From that time forward, my work improved
vastly. I used my illustrator's eye for
balance and form, my love and knowledge
of fine art, historical and contemporary,
along with what I have learned of
design history to create pieces that not only
were pleasing to the eye, but also
evoked more subtle ideas.
